April is National Poetry Month – What Are You Writing and Reading?

All of the month of April is a time to honor poets and their contribution to literature. As a writer, I feel that poetry is the most vulnerable a person can be through words on a paper. Poetry is personal, intimate and allows you to glance inside the soul of the author.

Here is a personal poem I wrote some time ago, as a reflection on the issue of guns in our school system. I would love to know what you think about this piece:

The First Day of School

Welcome to class, is it your first day?

Come with me now, I’ll show you the way-

Down the first hallway, turn to your right.

There’s your classroom- with doors locked up tight.

Here are the guards, and yes, they have guns.

Here is the playground, go son, have fun.

What are you writing and/or reading for national poetry month? All month long we are accepting contributions from our readers that focus on poetry. Send us an email if you would like your writing featured in our blog!
